After the fall of the Roman Empire, in the 8th century the city formed an autonomous duchy independent of the Byzantine Empire; subsequently, from the 13th century for about six hundred years, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples, and then became the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons until the Unification of Italy. Home to Federico II, the oldest state university in Europe, it also houses the "Orientale," the oldest university for Sinological and Oriental studies on the continent.
The birthplace of the Neapolitan language, Naples has exercised and continues to exercise a strong role in numerous fields of knowledge and culture.
Naples is also the cradle of figurative arts: original architectural and pictorial movements were born here, such as Caravaggism, the Posillipo school, and Neapolitan Art Nouveau, as well as minor arts of international importance, such as Capodimonte porcelain and the Neapolitan Nativity scene. It is at the origin of a distinctive form of theatre and a peculiar culinary tradition that includes foods that have become global icons, such as Neapolitan pizza: in particular, the art of its pizzaioli has been declared intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. In 1995, the historic center of Naples was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, for its exceptional monuments that bear witness to the succession of Mediterranean and European cultures. The central station is a 15-minute walk away, while Naples Capodichino Airport can be reached in about 20 minutes by car.
