Holidays in a listed building combines heritage conservation and tourism. Historically valuable buildings are taken over, gently renovated and rented out as holiday flats. The model provides a double benefit: the monuments are given a new future and the holiday guests experience a stay in an exceptional building. The idea is being realised by the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal (FiB), which was founded in 2005 by the Swiss Heritage Society.
Parking: The public car park is about 200m from the house (below the house next to the road). The car park is free and uncovered. Access directly in front of the house is not guaranteed. There is a small footpath first up a staircase and then through the meadows to the house (7 minutes walking distance).
Public transport: The bus stop is called Beatenberg Hubel and is within 7 minutes walking distance of the house.
Number of persons 2 to 4: A baby cot (up to 2 years) is available. The house can accommodate two guests (plus baby). There is a double bed for two people. In addition, two more people can sleep on mattresses. Please enquire separately. The barn is a converted farm building. The entrance area and the bathroom are on the ground floor. On the upper floor there is a loft-like room with a kitchen, dining area for four people and a sofa bed and stove. The floors are made of wood, which is why we recommend good slippers.
Garden: The house is surrounded by lush meadows above the road (which is not visible or audible) with spectacular views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
WLAN: Is available.
Open: The house can be rented all year round.
Pets: Pets are not allowed.
Altitude: 1200 metres above sea level.
BARN - hay barn converted into a "loft"
History & Information
The more than 200-year-old barn in Beatenberg was built according to traditional log construction methods. It was not used for around fifteen years. In 2007, the barn was renovated with the support of the cantonal monument preservation office and the local heritage organisation to preserve its original character. It can be used as a holiday flat for two people. The upper floor consists of a single, loft-like room with kitchen, lounge and bedroom. Two windows facing the mountain and the village as well as two skylights brighten the room and provide views of the immediate surroundings. The viewing slits in the knitted wall provide a wonderful view of the other side of the valley. On the lower floor there is a spacious entrance room, the bathroom and a storage room.
Renovation
The original building fabric was retained and restored as far as possible. In addition to the rotten wooden planks, the roof also had to be replaced. As is customary in the region, the mountain-side wall was clad on the outside with wooden shingles. According to the house within a house principle, the old barn is now to a certain extent the shell of a new house. However, the complete glazing of the valley-side knitted wall means that this is still very noticeable in the interior. The interior is completely new. The kitchen and sanitary facilities meet contemporary standards. The existing openings of the barn and hayloft doors have been glazed. Two skylights have been added as additional openings.
Parking
The barn is located above the main road. The Hubel bus stop and car park are right next to the turn-off to the holiday home. From there, the holiday home is a five-minute walk away on a footpath. You can NOT drive to the house.

The "barn" is a listed building that has been renovated with great respect for the existing substance. The tenant is aware of this and treats the property with care. Although technically equipped to modern standards, certain functional details do not comply with current standards and harbour a potential source of danger. The tenant is aware of these circumstances. The owner, e-domizil and the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal disclaim any liability.
